Methods for the recovery and purification of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) from biomass containing PHAs, wherein the methods include treating the biomass or partially purified PHA with ozone, in at least one step of a purification process, have been developed. Treatment of PHA-containing biomass or partially purified PHA with ozone yields an enhanced level of purity suitable for coating and other applications. The ozone treatment also has the added advantage that the resulting PHA polymer or polymer latex is essentially odor- free. The ozone treatment may be used alone or in combination with other treatment, extraction, and separation stages, and is especially suitable for the treatment of PHA-containing latexes, slurries, suspensions, and organic solutions.

L'invention concerne des procédés pour la récupération et la purification des polyhydroxyalcanoates (PHA) contenus dans une biomasse. Ces procédés consistent à traiter à l'ozone cette biomasse ou les PHA partiellement purifiés, au cours d'au moins une étape d'un procédé de purification. Le traitement à l'ozone d'une biomasse ou de PHA partiellement purifiés donne un taux de pureté amélioré indiqué pour les opérations d'enduction et pour d'autres applications. Le traitement à l'ozone présente également l'avantage supplémentaire de donner un polymère PHA ou un latex polymère quasiment inodore. Le traitement à l'ozone peut être utilisé seul ou combiné à d'autres étapes de traitement, d'extraction et de séparation et est particulièrement indiqué pour le traitement de latex, de pâtes, de suspensions, et de solutions organiques contenant des PHA.
