A protocol for measuring the bone apposition rate of a subject using a label such as a tetracycline antibiotic, a dye such as alizarin (1, 2 -dihydroxyanthraquinone), or calcein The interval between administering first and second doses of the label is about 72 hours or less. Usually, tetracycline is delivered to an animal by a parenteral route and the interval is in the neighbourhood of 48 hours Within about one hour to about forty-eight hours, the subject organism is sacrificed and a bone sample obtained therefrom. The bone sample is sectioned and the distance between the first and second dosages is measured The bone mineral apposition rate is then determined by dividing the measured distance by the time interval between the administration of the two dosages of label.
