21 PORTABLE DATA CARRIER WITH AN OPTICAL INDICATING AREA ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A portable data carrier such as an access card for controlling account transactions or for storing a balance to be debited when accessing a terminal, visually indicates information on an indicating field which can be changed by selective heating to indicate a new balance or the like when the card is used to access the terminal. The card has an optical indicating area that can be set and/or reset by selective heating under control of the terminal. The indicating area is defined by a film with a layer which can be fixed in distinguishable transparent or nontransparent conditions by selective heating to different temperatures, and can also be reset. The information thus written lasts indefinitely without power input, but can be rewritten at any time by first blanking the changeable portion of the indicating area, namely by heating the changeable portion generally to one of two temperature levels, followed by cooling, then heating only the selected areas to be marked to a second of the two temperatures, leaving an optically distinguishable record.
