ABSTRACT This invention relates to 2-phenylalkanoate esters of the formula: Image and non-toxic pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, wherein R1 and R2, which may be the same or different, are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 6 carbons, cycloalkyl of 3 to 6 carbons or together represent a methylene group -(CH2)n- where n is a whole number of from 1 to 6; and R3 and R4 are variously defined. The esters are useful as inhibitors of human leukocyte elastase and may be used in the treatment of acute respiratory syndrome, myocardial infarc- tion or periodontal disease.
