The invention proposes a device (6; 6'), and curling tongs (1; 1') having such a device (6; 6'), for creating volume in the hair, by means of a portion of the hair nearest the head being pinched between leg elements (7, 7'; 8, 8') which are provided with a wave shape (11, 11'; 12, 12') of decreasing amplitude (a), so that this portion acquires a wave shape (11, 11'; 12, 12') or curl which is sufficient to lift the hair. The appearance of the hair is not substantially changed otherwise. The effect lasts until the hair is washed.
