The present invention relates to a method and apparatus of automatically switching functionality of telephone lines in an office telephony system from a first function to a second function based on predetermined criteria. In order to avoid wasting telephone line resources in an office system, a switch is provided to switch the functionality of a telephone line from voice communication to data communication and vice versa. The predetermined criteria may include time of day or the day of the week. The switch is a self-contained unit which also monitors the telephone lines.
