A luminescent device is disclosed that comprises an electroluminescent phosphor in operative contact with a light-emitting material wherein excitation of the electroluminescent phosphor by an alternating current electrical field causes the emission of light by the light-emitting material. Methods of making the device and an electroluminescent display device in which it is used are also described.
