A method of testing an elongate member, such as a pipe (12) carrying petroleum products or other liquids, and particularly where the pipe has a layer of insulation (34). There is a portable testing apparatus (16) where a pair of antennas (20, 22) are mounted to a portable support structure at spaced locations. The antennas are placed adjacent to the pipe, and a pulse (46) having a relatively sharp rise time is transmitted along the pipe so as to pass by test locations at the first and second antennas. Where there is a corroded section of pipe between the antennas, there are modifications in the pulse (48a, 48b) which can be analyzed to identify the area of corrosion.
