This process involves feeding cellulose into an extruder with an acid solution. The extruder is comprised of a screw and a barrel. The screw is rotated so as to pressurize the cellulose, and the cellulose undergoes acid hydrolysis and forms microcrystalline cellulose. The invented process can be accomplished by using pure cellulose or a lignocellulosic material as the starting material. If a lignocellulosic material is used, then a basic solution is added to it and the lignocellulosic material is fed through an extruder so as to obtain a mixture comprising lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose. The lignin and hemicellulose are extracted and the remaining cellulose is processed, as discussed previously, to form microcrystalline cellulose.

Procédé consistant à introduire de la cellulose dans une extrudeuse avec une solution acide. Cette extrudeuse est composée d'une vis et d'un corps. On fait tourner la vis afin de mettre la cellulose sous pression et on fait subir à cette dernière une hydrolyse acide, ce qui permet d'obtenir de la cellulose microcristalline. On peut mettre en oeuvre ce procédé avec de la cellulose pure ou un matériau lignocellulosique en tant que matériau de départ. Si on utilise un matériau lignocellulosique, on ajoute alors une solution basique et on alimente l'extrudeuse en matériau lignocellulosique, de manière à obtenir un mélange composé de lignine, d'hémicellulose et de cellulose. On extrait la lignine et l'hémicellulose et on traite la cellulose restante, au moyen du procédé décrit ci-dessus, afin d'obtenir de la cellulose microcristalline.
