Apparatus for detecting a specific target odour comprises: a detector unit adapted to have removably associated therewith a holding unit for housing at least one insect in a predetermined position; means for exposing an insect in a holding unit associated with the detector unit to a sample of gas to be tested; and means for enabling monitoring of a response of the insect to the sample thereby to detect a response indicative of the target odour. In use of the apparatus, a holding unit housing at lest one insect that responds in a detectable manner to the target odour is associated with the detector unit. A sample of gas to be tested is supplied to the apparatus, for exposure to the insect or insects in the holding unit. The insect is monitored for a response indicative of the target odour, thus enabling determination as to whether or not the target odour is present in the sample. Because the holding unit is not part of the detector unit but is removably associated with therewith, the holding unit can be used to transport an insect or insects housed therein from a first, remote location, e.g. where insects are raised and conditioned, to a point of use at a second location where the detector unit is located. The detector unit may be a permanent or semi-permanent fixture at a point of use, or may be in the form of a portable unit. Also disclosed is a method of detecting a specific target odour.

L'invention concerne un appareil de détection d'une odeur spécifique recherchée qui comprend une unité de détection à laquelle est associée de façon amovible une unité de support destinée à contenir au moins un insecte dans une position prédéterminée; un dispositif qui permet d'exposer l'insecte contenu dans l'unité de support associée à l'unité de détection à un échantillon gazeux à tester; et enfin, un dispositif qui permet de surveiller la réaction de l'insecte à l'échantillon et par conséquent de détecter une réaction qui correspond à l'odeur recherchée. Pendant l'utilisation, une unité de support renfermant au moins un insecte qui répond de manière détectable à l'odeur recherchée est associée à l'unité de détection. Le ou les insectes contenus dans l'unité de support sont exposés à un échantillon gazeux à tester introduit dans l'appareil. L'insecte fait l'objet d'une surveillance visant à détecter une réaction qui correspond à l'odeur recherchée, ce qui permet de déterminer si l'odeur recherchée est présente dans l'échantillon. Le fait que l'unité de détection soit indépendante de l'unité de support à laquelle elle est associée de manière amovible permet d'utiliser cette dernière pour transporter un ou plusieurs insectes d'un premier endroit éloigné, où le insectes sont prélevés et traités, à un point d'utilisation situé dans un second endroit où se trouve l'unité de détection. L'unité de détection peut se présenter sous la forme d'un appareil à fixation permanente ou semi-permanente au niveau du point d'utilisation, ou celle d'une unité portative. L'invention concerne par ailleurs un procédé de détection d'une odeur spécifique recherchée.
