The invention relates to a method for operating a network having terminals (EG1, ..., EGm) which can be interconnected via switching nodes (K1, ..., Km) in the network. When a connection exists between two terminals, other correspondingly authorized terminals can enter into this connection. If one terminal (EG1) from among the terminals (EG1 to EG6) participating in the connection wants to maintain the connection with one terminal (EG2) only, and wants to separate the other terminals (EG3 to EG6) from the connection, this terminal (EG1) sends a corresponding request to all switching nodes (K1...K5) participating in the communication network formed by the terminals (EG1 to EG6). On receipt of this request, each switching node in the communication network sends back a corresponding acknowledgement to the switching node from which it received the request. A switching node sends back an acknowledgement to the switching node from which it received the request only once it has received an acknowledgement from all the switching nodes to which it sent a request. On arrival of the acknowledgement in the switching node (K1) assigned to the terminal (EG1) which sent the request, said switching node (K1) sends a request for separation of the relevant terminals (EG3 to EG6) to the other switching nodes (K2 to K5). The switching nodes (K1, K2, K3, K4, K5) assigned to the terminals (EG3 to EG6) which are to be separated then separate these terminals from the communication network.
