An alloy design approach to modify and improve existing iron based glasses. The modification is related to increasing the stability of the glass, which results in increased crystallization temperature, and increasing the reduced crystallization temperature (Tcrystaiiization/Tmelting), which leads to a critical cooling rate for metallic glass formation. The modification to the iron alloys includes the addition of lanthanide elements, including gadolinium. The resulting properties of such a modified alloy are compared to those of an unmodified alloy in Figure 1.

L'invention porte sur un nouveau concept d'alliage tendant à modifier et améliorer les verres au fer existants. La modification a pour but d'accroître la stabilité du verre en augmentant la température de cristallisation et en augmentant la température de cristallisation réduite (T¿cristallisation?/T¿fusion?), qui se traduit par une vitesse réduite de refroidissement critique en vue de la formation du verre métallique. La dite modification des alliages de fer comprend l'adjonction de lanthanides dont le gadolinium.
