A device (10) for the application of a liquid or viscous coating medium (18) onto a moving material web (12), specifically a paper or cardboard web is introduced, in which the coating medium is applied to the material web (12 by means of a curtain coater (16) in the form of a curtain or veil (20). In addition a suction device (24) is provided for suction removal of air (26, 28) which is carried along by the material web (12) and/or the veil (20). A dynamic pressure analyzer (30, 34) determines the pressure of the air that accumulates before the line of contact (T) of the curtain (20) with the moving background surface (12a), when viewed in the direction of travel (L) of the moving background (12a). A control unit (32 controls suction power of the ruction device (24) relative to the determined dynamic pressure.
