Iron is a detrimental impurity in aluminium alloys since it causes hard and brittle iron-rich intermetallic phases to precipitate during solidification. The most detrimental phase in the microstructure is the beta-phase of the Al5FeSi-type because it is platelet-shaped. The present invention provides a method of producing iron-containing Al-alloys free from platelet-shaped beta- phase by controlling and regulating the precipitation path during solidification such that the precipitation of Fe containing intermetallic phases starts with the precipitation of the hexagonal phase of the Al8Fe2Si- type. The presence of the Al8Fe2Si-type phase result in that beta-phase will not develop the common platlet-morphology but nucleate on and cover the Al8Fe2Si-type phase which in turn has a less harmful morphology. Furthermore, the invention defines the use of thermal analysis as a means for controlling the morphology of the precipitates.

Le fer est une impureté nuisible des alliages d'aluminium amenant la précipitation, pendant la solidification, de phases intermétalliques riches en fer, dures et cassantes. La phase la plus nuisible de la microstructure est la phase bêta du type Al¿5?FeSi en raison de sa structure en plaquettes. La présente invention porte sur un procédé de production d'alliages d'Al exempts de phase bêta en plaquettes consistant à surveiller et réguler le processus de précipitation pendant la solidification, de manière à ce que la précipitation du fer contenant des phases intermétalliques débute par la précipitation de la phase hexagonale de type Al¿8?Fe¿2?Si. La présence de la phase de type Al¿8?Fe¿2?Si a pour résultat que la phase bêta ne développe pas la morphologie usuelle en plaquette, mais s'agglomère sur la phase de type Al¿8?Fe¿2?Si et la couvre, laquelle, de ce fait, présente une morphologie moins nuisible. De plus, l'invention prévoit le recours à l'analyse thermique comme moyen de gérer la morphologie des précipités.
