This invention relates to novel monoclonal antibodies that specifically bind to the alpha-folate receptor. In some embodiments, the antibodies inhibit a biological activity of folate receptor-.alpha. (FR-.alpha.). The antibodies are useful in the treatment of certain cancers, particularly cancers that have increased cell surface expression of the alpha-folate receptor ("FR-.alpha."), such as ovarian, breast, renal, colorectal, lung, endometrial, or brain cancer. The invention also relates to cells expressing the monoclonal antibodies, antibody derivatives, such as chimeric and humanized monoclonal antibodies, antibody fragments, and methods of detecting and treating cancer using the antibodies, derivatives, and fragments.
L'invention concerne de nouveaux anticorps monoclonaux qui se lient de manière spécifique au récepteur de folate alpha. Dans certains modes de réalisation, ces anticorps inhibent une activité biologique du récepteur de folate .alpha. (FR-.alpha.). Lesdits anticorps peuvent servir à traiter certains cancers, en particulier des cancers au cours desquels le récepteur de folate alpha (FR-.alpha.) est plus fortement exprimé à la surface des cellules, tels que le cancer de l'ovaire, le cancer du sein, le cancer du rein, le cancer colorectal, le cancer du poumon, le cancer de l'endomètre ou le cancer du cerveau. Cette invention concerne en outre des cellules qui expriment lesdits anticorps monoclonaux, des dérivés d'anticorps tels que des anticorps monoclonaux chimériques et humanisés, des fragments d'anticorps, et des procédés pour détecter et traiter un cancer, au moyen de ces anticorps, dérivés et fragments.
