A logging-while-drilling sensor includes a gamma ray source (114) and at least two Nal detectors (116, 118) spaced apart from the source for determining measurements indicative of the formation density. A magnetometer on the drill collar measures the relative azimuth of the Nal detectors. An acoustic caliper is used for making standoff measurements of the Nal detectors. Measurements made by the detectors are partitioned into spatial bins defined by standoff and azimuth. Within each azimuthal sector, the density measurements are compensated for standoff to provide a single density measurement for the sector. The azimuthal sectors are combined in such a way as to provide a compensated azimuthal geosteering density. The method of the invention may also be used with neutron porosity logging devices.

Ce capteur, permettant une diagraphie en cours de forage, comporte une source de rayons gamma (14) et au moins deux d~tecteurs Na1 (116, 118) distants de la source et analysant les mesures repr~sentatives de la densit~ de la formation. Un magn~tom­tre situ~ sur une masse-tige mesure l'azimut relatif des d~tecteurs Na1. On utilise un calibre acoustique pour effectuer les mesures d'~cart des d~tecteurs Na1. Les mesures prises par les d~tecteurs sont subdivis~es en segments correspondant ~ l'~cart et ~ l'azimut. Dans chaque segment azimutal, les mesures de densit~ sont corrig~es en fonction de l'~cart afin d'obtenir une ~valuation de densit~ unique. On combine les segments azimutaux afin d'obtenir une densit~ azimutale d'orientation g~ologique. Il est ~galement possible d'utiliser le proc~d~ selon l'invention avec des appareils de diagraphie de porosit~ neutronique.
