A process for removing or stabilizing arsenic and/or selenium from aqueous streams or slurries is provided that includes contacting the streams or slurry with a composition containing lanthanum chloride. The lanthalum chloride composition can optionally contain various lanthanides. The composition can optionally contain ferric or ferrous sulfate. The process is preferably conducted by adjusting the pH of solution to between about 8 or 10, adding 2 moles of lanthanum chloride for every mole of arsenic or selenium ions present in solution, adding 5 to 6 moles ferric or ferrous ions for every mole of arsenic or selenium ions present in solution and adjusting the oxidation potential of the solution to between 200-400 mV for removal of selenium ions and between 100-200 mV for removal of arsenic ions. Using the processes of this invention, the selenium and arsenic concentrations can be reduced to less than currently acceptable limits and arsenic and selenium can be stabilized from leaching, decomposition or other degradation processes.

La présente invention concerne un procédé d'élimination et de stabilisation de l'arsenic et/ou du sélénium présents dans des flux aqueux et des boues. Ce procédé consiste à mettre le flux ou la boue en contact avec du chlorure de lanthanum. La composition de chlorure de lanthanum peut éventuellement renfermer divers lanthanides; elle peut également renfermer du sulfate ferrique ou du sulfate ferreux. Le procédé selon l'invention consiste de préférence à: régler le pH de la solution à 8 ou 10; ajouter deux moles de chlorure de lanthanum pour chaque mole d'ions arsenic ou sélénium présent dans la solution et régler le potentiel d'oxydation de la solution entre 200 et 400 mV pour l'élimination des ions sélénium et entre 100 et 200 mV pour l'élimination des ions sélénium. L'application de ce procédé permet de ramener les teneurs en arsenic et en sélénium à des valeurs inférieures aux limites actuellement acceptables pour ces corps. L'arsenic et le sélénium peuvent être stabilisés par lixiviation, décomposition et autres procédés de dégradation.
