Abstract The present invention relates to a particulate preparation comprising a biomedical agent associated with polymer particles having an average diameter not greater than 1 micron, and having a biocompatible hydrophilic surface derived from a biodegradable sugar based surfactant having a molecular weight of less than 2000. In another aspect, there is disclosed a process for making the particulate preparation which comprises the steps of: (a) preparing a water immiscible organic solvent solution of a polymer, and optionally the biomedical agent; (b) combining the solution of (a) with an aqueous solution of a biodegradable sugar based surfactant having a molecular weight of less than 2000; (c) homogenizing the mixture formed in (b) until uniformly emulsified; and (d) removing the organic solvent.
