A fishing reel includes a housing having an exterior surface, a circular end wall and a peripheral sidewall encircling the end wall thereby forming a generally cylindrical interior cavity. A spindle is provided having a first end and a second end. The first end is secured to the end wall and the second end extends axially into the interior cavity. The second end has attachment threads. A mounting bracket is secured to the exterior surface of the housing, whereby the housing is attachable to a fishing rod. A spool is provided having a first circular sidewall, a second circular sidewall and a concentrically aligned connective member. A spindle receiving bore extends through the spool from the first sidewall through the connective member to the second sidewall. The spool is mounted within the interior cavity of the housing by inserting the second circular sidewall into the interior cavity and extending the spindle through the spindle receiving bore. A handle is secured to the first circular sidewall of the spool, whereby the spool is manually rotatable in relation to the housing. A manually rotatable clamping member is threaded onto the attachment threads at the second end of the spindle. The clamping member exerts a clamping force upon the first circular sidewall of the spool, thereby providing resistance to the feeding out of line from the spool. The clamping force is adjustable by rotation of the clamping member. The advantage of the fishing reel is its silent operation.
