ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention provides a process for the suspension copoly- merization of styrene and methacrylic acid. The copolymerization is conducted in the presence of a water-soluble inorganic salt such as an alkali metal halide or sulfate to improve the stabili- ty of the disperse phase and to control the viscosity of the co- polymerization mixture. The process is particularly suitable for use at low water:monomer ratios. The thermoplastic copolymer beads produced are suitable for foaming or other molding applications.
