ABSTRACT: HPS discharge lamp. The invention concerns a high pressure sodium discharge lamp with an elongate discharge vessel having a metallic band proximate an end of the discharge vessel and disposed on the discharge vessel circumferentially thereof. The surface of the discharge vessel is free of further auxiliary conductors. Means are provided for applying a voltage to the metallic band for inducing ionization throughout the volume of the discharge vessel to facilitate lamp starting.
