An Internet service provider can improve Internet-like services to its customers by providing closely-controlled server computers and intelligent proxy servers under the control of a central control computer. The performance network provides access to information such as web sites through data networks operated and controlled by the Internet service provider. As the work load of the server increases, or as it might be unable to respond to requests for information by subscribers, the central control computer can allocate computation resources of other, less burdened machines to act as servers to those customers. The network also collects and aggregates customer information that can be made available to the providers of the server content.
