An apparatus and a method for scrubbing gas vented from a vacuum truck that creates less back pressure. A first step involves providing an elongate tank disposed in a horizontal orientation and having an interior, a top, and a bottom. An inlet is positioned adjacent the bottom. An outlet is positioned adjacent the top. A porous bed for particulate solids scrubbing medium is disposed within the interior in a position intermediate the top and the bottom. Gas entering the inlet freely flows the length of the interior but must pass through the scrubbing medium in order to reach the outlet. A second step involves venting a vacuum discharge of a vacuum truck into the inlet of the elongate tank.
