Intervulcanized compositions having improved curing efficiency are prepared by the free radical curing of a mixture of an ethylenically unsaturated diolefin polymer such as natural or synthetic rubber and a saturated or low unsaturation polymer such as an isobutylene/para-methylstyrene copolymer which contains functional groups pendant to the polymer chain. These functional groups contain an olefinic or vinyl double bond positioned alpha, beta to a substituent group which activates the double bond towards free radical addition reactions with the diolefin polymer. Preferred functionality includes benzylic ester functionality represented by structure (1), wherein R2 and R3 are indenpendently selected from hydrogen or C1 to C6 alkyl, and R4 is selected from hydrogen, C1 to C28 alkyl, aryl or C2 to C28 alkenyl.
Des compositions intervulcanisées présentant un pouvoir de durcissement amélioré sont préparées par durcissement d'un mélange d'un polymère dioléfinique tel que du caoutchouc naturel ou synthétique et d'un polymère saturé ou faiblement insaturé tel qu'un copolymère d'isobutylène/para-méthylstyrène qui contient des groupes suspendus de la chaîne polymère. Ces groupes fonctionnels contiennent une double liaison oléfinique ou vinyl en position alpha, bêta par rapport à un groupe substituant qui active la liaison double vers des réactions d'addition de radicaux libres avec le polymère dioléfinique. La fonctionnalité préférée comprend la fonctionnalité d'ester bénzylique représentée par la structure (1) dans laquelle R¿2? et R¿3? sont choisis indépendamment parmi hydrogène, alkyle C¿1?-C¿6?, et R¿4? est choisi parmi hydrogène, alkyle C¿1?-C¿28?, aryle ou bien alcényle C¿2?-C¿28?.
