A gaming machine accepts currency and indicates the number of credits available for use in wagering. As a convenience to the player, a continuous play feature is available, which when activated, automatically wagers and initiates play on behalf of the player. The time between automatic wagers may be adjusted by the player to suit the player's preference for a faster or slower game. A player becomes eligible to participate in certain larger shared prizes by making a sufficiently large qualifying wager. Once eligible, the player remains eligible for a predetermined grace period. According to a preferred embodiment, a countdown timer indicates the time remaining in the grace period. If the countdown timer reaches zero, the grace period has expired and the player is no longer eligible. A player can regain eligibility status by making a subsequent qualifying wager although this eligibility is not retroactive.
