ABSTRACT The invention provides a process for the purification of an aqueous solution containing metal ions and which contains divalent manganese cations as an impurity. The process comprises, at a hydrogen ion concentration in the solution of 1 x 10-7- 2 moles/?, oxidizing the divalent manganese (Mn2+) cations to Mn4+ cations to precipitate MnO2 from the solution. The oxidising of the MnO2 cations is catalyzed by carrying out the oxidation in the presence of catalytically active manganese dioxide.
