Slab gels held on trays (12) are agitated in a solution by an apparatus that includes a tray carrier (31) a tank (51) that receives the tray carrier (31) with sufficient room to allow the carrier (31) to move back and forth within the tank (51), and a motor (62) with a crankpin (65) that is connected to the tray carrier (31) in a reciprocating connection that translates the circular path of the crankpin (65) into linear movement of the tray carrier (31).
