A mixture containing a relatively large amount of 2,4-dibromo-4-fluorobutane- carboxylic acid or derivatives thereof and a relatively small amount of 2,4- dibromo-3-fluorobutanecarboxylic acid or derivatives thereof is prepared by brominating (1R,2R)-, (1S,2R)- and/or (1R,2S)-2-fluorocyclopropanecarboxylic acid and/or corresponding carbonyl halides in the presence of a phosphorus compound and then treating with water, an alcohol or an amine. This process is very particularly suitable for the preparation of the technically important (1S,2S)-2-fluorocyclopropanecarboxylic acid from other isomers of 2-fluorocyclo-propanecarboxylic acid.
