The present invention relates to an energy and effluent saving process for the production of N-phosphonomethyliminodiacetic acid (PMIDA), an intermediate in the preparation of glyphosate. An alkali metal salt of iminodiacetic acid is reacted with phosphorous acid and a strong mineral acid, or a source thereof to form iminodiacetic phosphite and the alkali metal salt of the strong mineral acid. After removal of the latter salt, the iminodiacetic phosphite is converted to PMIDA by reaction with formaldehyde. PMIDA is recovered and the solution remaining can be recycled in the process.

La présente invention concerne un procédé économe en énergie et en effluents permettant de produire un acide N-phosphonométhyl-iminodiacétique (PMIDA) en tant que composé intermédiaire entrant dans la préparation de glyphosate. Un sel de métal alcalin d'acide iminodiacétique est mis en réaction avec de l'acide phosphoreux et un acide minéral fort, ou avec une source desdites substances, pour former un phosphite iminodiacétique et le sel de métal alcalin de l'acide minéral fort. Après extraction dudit sel, le phosphite iminodiacétique est transformée en PMIDA par réaction avec un formaldéhyde. Le PMIDA est récupéré et la solution résiduelle peut être recyclée dans le circuit.
