A device (10) for collecting cervical and vaginal cell specimens includes a stem (12) and a first brush (14) thereon for collecting endocervical cell specimens by inserting an end of the stem (12) with the first brush (14) into the vagina and within the mouth of the cervix and rotating the stem (12) with the first brush (14) wiping against the endocervical wall. The device (10) also includes an actuator (16) supported on the stem (12) and having a second brush (18) thereon for collecting exocervical cell specimens. By applying finger pressure, the actuator (16) is moved relative to the stem (12) so as to pivot the second brush (18) from adjacent to the stem (12), where the stem (12) is easy to insert and removal into and from the vagina, to away from the stem (12), where collecting of exocervical cell specimens by the second brush (18) and endocervical cell specimens by the first brush (14) can take place in the same rotational motion of the stem (12).
