The present invention relates to a method of identifying the presence, movement and source of microbes within a facility, in particular to a method that uses the genetic fingerprint of microbes to identify their presence, movement and source. The method comprises the steps of: identifying two or more sites in the facility where the microbes may be present; taking swab samples, water samples and/or air samples from designated locations; analyzing bacterial isolates from each of the samples to obtain a genetic fingerprint of the microbes found in each of the samples; and correlating the genetic fingerprints to the sites where the samples were taken and comparing the genetic fingerprints at each location to each other o determine if they are substantially identical.
