12 Invention: INSTRUMENT HANDLE FOR USE WITH INTERCHANGEABLE BATTERIES Inventor: JOHN D. CONNORS Abstract A battery handle assembly for an electrically illuminated diagnostic instrument held (13) has a battery holder (15), a connector housing (30) removably attached to the handle, and removably mounting the instrument head (13). To accommodate a rechargeable battery or non- rechargeable cells, adapters (30, 60, 70) are provided which join the distal end of the battery holder (15) to the connector housing (40). For the rechargeable battery, the adapter (30) has an internal ac to dc connector, and a pair of prongs (46) permit the unit to be plugged in to a standard socket (58) after the connector housing (40) is detached. A conductive probe (45) projects axially between the prongs to contact a distal terminal of the rechargeable battery.
