Case7429(2) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE PRODUCTlON OF ALPHA, PARA-DIMETHYLSTYRENE This invention relates to a process for the production of alpha, para-dimethyl styrene by catalytic dehydrogenation of para-cymene in the substantial absence of oxygen or an oxidising gas and in the presence of steam. The catalyst used is iron oxide, Fe304. The reaction is carried out at a temperature in the range from 500 to 700°C and a pressure from 0.1 to 10 atmospheres. The product is a valuable intermediate for the manufacture of perfumes.
