An apparatus (10) and method for removing phosphorus from a wastewater effluent stream (16) from a hog waste lagoon is disclosed. The wastewater effluent (16) is introduced to the bottom of an inverted cone-shaped continuous crystallizer (12) including a fluidized bed of struvite therein. An effective amount of ammonia (20) is introduced to the wastewater effluent (16) at the bottom of the crystallizer (12) to elevate the pH of wastewater effluent (16) a predetermined amount. An effective amount of magnesium (18) is also introduced to the wastewater effluent (16) at the bottom of the crystallizer (12). The composition adjusted wastewater effluent is then continuously passed upwardly through the fluidized bed of struvite to reduce the total phosphorus content of the wastewater effluent (16) a predetermined amount of up to about 80 % or more. The treated wastewater effluent stream (24) is removed from the top of the crystallizer (12), and struvite crystals that grow large enough to sink from the bottom of the crystallizer (12) are periodically removed from a collection chamber (22) therebeneath.

L'invention concerne un appareil (10) et un procédé pour éliminer le phosphore d'un débit d'effluents d'eaux usées (16) provenant d'un étang d'épuration d'effluents porcins. Le débit d'effluents d'eaux usées (16) est placé au fond d'un cristallisoir continu en forme de cône inversé (12) contenant un lit fluidisé de struvite. Une quantité efficace d'ammoniac (20) est introduite dans les effluents (16), au fond du cristallisoir (12), pour en augmenter le pH d'une valeur préétablie. Une quantité efficace de magnésium (18) est également introduite dans les effluents (16), au fond du cristallisoir (12). Les effluents d'eaux usées, dont la composition est rajustée, sont ensuite circulés en continu vers le haut, au travers du lit fluidisé de struvite, afin de réduire la teneur totale en phosphore des effluents (16) d'une quantité préétablie d'environ 80 % ou plus. Le débit d'effluents d'eaux usées traité (24) est retiré du sommet du cristallisoir (12), et les cristaux de struvite suffisamment grands pour s'enfoncer du fond du cristallisoir (12) sont périodiquement retirés du collecteur (22) situé sous le cristallisoir.
