ABSTRACT An apparatus for limiting the rotational travel of a shaft of a valve actuator comprising; shaft engaging means, having detent means disposed therewith, connected to a shaft accessible from said valve actuator, stop means coupled to said actuator, wherein when said shaft engaging means rotates with said shaft, said detent means cooperates with said stop means, such that after a predetermined degree of rotational travel of the shaft, said detent means in cooperation with said stop means limits the rotational travel of said shaft of said valve actuator, such that the resultant force balance on said shaft engaging means and thus the shaft is substantially zero (for example there is no substantial side load on said shaft tending to deteriorate the life of the bearing and/or the seals).
