Apparatus for winding filamentary material is dislosed. The apparatus controlls the rotation of a mandrel about an axis of rotation and the reciprocating movement of a traverse. As a result, filamentary material is wound on the mandrel in a coil having the configuration of 8. The coil forms a payout hole which has a substantially constant diameter. The hole extends from the inside of the coil to the outside thereof.
