An image (100) of particulate material, such as an X-ray image of coal, is captured and processed to determine a parameter of the material, such as particle density or particle size distribution. The performance or efficiency of a processing system, such as a dense medium separator, can be evaluated by determining parameters of the material before entry to and after exit from the processing system. The parameter is determined by comparing image characteristics (relating to statistical features or the like of the material), to a predetermined set of image characteristics. If the image (100) is obtained by transmission of radiation through the material, accuracy can be improved by measuring the thickness of the material.
Selon l'invention, une image (100) de matériau particulaire, telle qu'une image à rayons X de charbon, est capturée et traitée afin de déterminer un paramètre dudit matériau, tel que la densité des particules ou la répartition granulométrique. Les performances ou l'efficacité d'un système de traitement, tel qu'un séparateur à milieu dense, peuvent être évaluées par détermination de paramètres du matériau avant entrée dans le système de traitement, et après sortie de celui-ci. Les paramètres sont déterminés par comparaison des caractéristiques d'image (concernant des caractéristiques statistiques ou similaires du matériau), à un ensemble prédéterminé de caractéristiques d'image. Si l'image (100) est obtenue par transmission de rayonnement au travers du matériau, la précision peut être améliorée par mesure de l'épaisseur du matériau.
