CA 2139751

A single cannula for draining venous blood with which both partial and total bypass of the heart can be realized. To prevent incision in the right atrium, the cannula is inserted via an incision in the wall of one of the venae cava, is lead through the entrance of the vena cava in the right atrium, through the right atrium to the entrance of the other vena cava in the right atrium, and into the not-incised vena cava. To this purpose, the cannula is so designed that both a connection with the inferior vena cava as well as the superior vena cava is provided. This is done by providing the cannula with a bend, and by positioning a side opening in this bend. To realize total bypass and to provide cooling and isolation of the heart during operations, an inflatable cooling mantle is positioned around the part of the cannula that resides in the right atrium. Furthermore, provisions are made which, during total bypass, enable realization of selective and simultaneous access to the right atrium and to the mouth of the coronary sinus in the right atrium.
