A method of determining the voltage and current output required for the application of specific and selective electric and electromagnetic signals to diseased articular cartilage in the treatment of osteoarthritis, cartilage defects due to trauma or sports injury, or used as an adjunct with other therapies (cell transplantation, tissueengineered scaffolds, growth factors, etc.) for treating cartilage defects in the human knee joint and a device for delivering such signals to a patient's knee. An analytical model of the human knee is developed whereby the total tissue volume in the human knee may be determined for comparison to the total tissue volume of the diseased tissue in the animal model using electric field and current density histograms. The voltage and current output used in the animal model is scaled based on the ratio of the total tissue volume of the diseased tissue of the human to the total tissue volume of the diseased tissue in the animal model and the resulting field is applied to the diseased tissue of the human using at least two electrodes applied to the knee or a coil or solenoid placed around the knee. The voltage of the signal applied to the electrodes, coil or solenoid is varied based on the size of the knee joint; larger knee joints require larger voltages to generate the effective electric field.
Cette invention concerne un procédé permettant de déterminer la tension et l'intensité requises pour l'application de signaux électriques et électromagnétiques spécifiques et sélectifs à des cartilages articulaires blessés dans le cadre d'un traitement de l'ostéoarthrose, de défauts des cartilages dus à un traumatisme ou à une blessure d'origine sportive, ou bien en complément d'autres thérapies (transplants cellulaires, structures d'ingénierie tissulaire, facteurs de croissance, etc.) pour le traitement de défauts des cartilages de l'articulation du genou, et un dispositif d'application de tels signaux au genou du patient. On crée un modèle analytique du genou humain qui permet de comparer le volume tissulaire total du genou humain à au volume total des tissus malades dans le modèle animal au moyen d'histogrames de champ électrique et de densité de courant. La tension et l'intensité appliquées au modèle animal sont reportées à l'échelle en fonction du rapport entre le volume total des tissus lésés chez le patient et de volume total des tissus lésés dans le modèle animal, et l'on applique un champ correspondant aux tissus lésés chez le patient au moyen d'au moins deux électrodes placées dans le genou ou bien d'un bobinage ou d'un solénoïdes disposés autour du genou. La tension du signal appliquée aux électrodes , au bobinage ou au solénoïde varie en fonction de la taille de la rotule du genou, des rotules plus grosses exigeant des tensions plus élevées pour la création d'un champ électrique efficace.
