ABSTRACT A novel absorbent for water and aqueous solutions is disclosed. The absorbent comprises a product from the tuber of a plant from the family of Araceae, for example Konjak flour or konjakumannan. In a preferred embodiment the absorbent further contains a highly absorbent, water swellable natural or synthetic polymer, such as guar or polymers based on copolymerized acrylic acid, salts thereof and acrylamide. The absorbents according to the invention absorb spontaneously blood and other serous body fluids and have a good retention capacity. They are useful for the production of sanitary articles, such as nappies, sanitary towels, tampons and other absorbent products.
