The invention provides a plug extracting device that is primed by a worker before connecting the plug of an appliance or other load, for example a vacuum cleaner, by compressing a priming member into an extracting member. The priming member is biased to a retracted position by a biasing element and locked into the primed position by a retaining mechanism. When a release mechanism activated by a remote switch is activated and the retaining mechanism is released, the energy of the spring is released and the priming mechanism returns to the retracted position, extracting the prongs of the plug from the receptacle.
