An input apparatus comprises an input device comprising a shuttle capable to move substantially within a two-dimensional surface when engaged by a user member. The input device and a display are communicatively connected to a host. A cursor is displayed and moved on the display. The shuttle is moved by engaging it and there is kinesthetic or tactile feedback to a user depending on the position of said shuttle within the surface. The feedback indicates that the shuttle travels to one of several preset positions. The input device is biased towards the nearest position within a set of predetermined locations. The cursor is moved in a direction and by a distance substantially similar to the direction and distance traveled by said shuttle. The shuttle may be depressed to select items on the display. L'invention concerne un appareil d'entrée qui comprend un dispositif d'entrée comprenant un obturateur capable de se déplacer sensiblement à l'intérieur d'une surface bidimensionnelle lorsqu'il est en prise par un élément d'utilisateur. Le dispositif d'entrée et un afficheur sont reliés par communication à un hôte. Un curseur est affiché et déplacé sur l'afficheur. L'obturateur est déplacé en le mettant en prise et il se produit un retour kinesthésique ou tactile vers l'utilisateur en fonction de la position dudit obturateur dans la surface. Le retour indique que l'obturateur se propage vers une ou plusieurs positions préétablies. Le curseur est déplacé dans une direction et d'une distance sensiblement semblables à la direction et à la distance effectuées par ledit obturateur.
