An edible product having a thin inorganic coating on at least a portion of its surface. The coating preferably forms a moisture/oxygen barrier to result in a coated edible product having an improved shelf-life. The edible products include food and pharmaceuticals. The inorganic materials used for the coating include SiO2, SiO, MgO, CaO, TiO2, ZnO and MnO. Processes and apparatuses for depositing a thin film of inorganic material onto an edible substrate are also disclosed. The preferred processes include sputtering and vapor deposition. The preferred apparatus provides for the continuous production of coated edible products.

L'invention est un produit comestible portant une mince couche inorganique sur au moins une partie de sa surface. Dans la concrétisation privilégiée de l'invention, cette couche forme une barrière contre l'humidité/oxygène et le produit comestible portant cette couche se conserve plus longtemps. Ces produits comestibles peuvent être des aliments et des produits pharmaceutiques. Les substances inorganiques utilisées dans la couche sont les suivantes : SiO2, SiO, MgO, CaO, TiO2, ZnO et MnO. Les procédés des appareils utilisables pour déposer une couche mince de matériau inorganique sur un substrat comestible sont également divulgués.
