A novel coupled two-way clustering approach to gene microarray data analysis, for identifying subsets of the genes and samples, such that when one of these items is used to cluster the other, stable and significant partitions emerge. The method of the present invention preferably uses iterative clustering in order to execute this search in an efficient way. This approach is especially suitable for gene microarray data, where the contributions of a variety of biological mechanisms to the gene expression levels are entangled in a large body of experimental data. The method of the present invention was applied to two gene microarray data sets, on colon cancer and leukemia. By identifying relevant subsets of the data and focusing on these subsets, partitions and correlations were found that were masked and hidden when the full data set was used in the analysis.

L'invention concerne une nouvelle approche de groupement bidirectionnel couplé concernant l'analyse de données relatives à un jeu ordonné de microéchantillons géniques, qui permet d'identifier des sous-ensembles des gènes et échantillons, si bien que, lorsqu'un de ces articles est utilisé pour agglomérer l'autre, on crée des séparations stables et significatifs. Le procédé de l'invention met en oeuvre, de préférence, un groupement itératif pouvant exécuter cette recherche de manière efficace. Cette approche convient particulièrement pour des données relatives à un jeu ordonné de microéchantillons géniques dans lequel les apports de divers mécanismes biologiques aux niveaux de l'expression génique sont enchevêtrés dans un grand corps de données expérimentales. Le procédé de l'invention a été appliqué à deux ensembles de données relatives à un jeu ordonné de microéchantillons géniques concernant le cancer du côlon et la leucémie. En identifiant des sous-ensembles pertinents des données et en se focalisant sur ces sous-ensembles, l'on a découvert des séparations et des corrélations qui étaient masquées ou cachées quand l'ensemble de données au complet était utilisé pour effectuer l'analyse.
