A method for propulsion of water-going vessels (1) comprising a plate (9), which is located in the water (2) and extends across a desired direction of motion for the vessel (1), where the plate (9) is moved from a first position (P1) to a second position (P2) and back. Under the influence of a motive force the extent of which varies sinusoidally, the plate (9) is brought into translatory and rectilinear oscillation about a neutral position (N2) between the first and the second position (P1 and P2 respectively), the neutral position (N2) being determined by a static equilibrium between spring forces influencing the plate (9). The plate (9) is controlled in such a manner that its plate plane extends perpendicularly to the vessel's (1) direction of motion, and a greater resistance is exerted by the plate (9) against the water when it is moved opposite to the vessel's desired direction of motion than when it is moved in this direction. La présente invention concerne un procédé permettant de propulser des navires (1) comprenant une plaque (9) située dans l'eau (2) et disposée en travers d'une direction souhaitée du mouvement du navire (1). On déplace cette plaque (9) d'une première position (P1) à une seconde position (P2) et inversement. Grâce à une force motrice décrivant une sinusoïde, la plaque (9) est amenée par oscillations rectilignes et translatoire à une position neutre (N2) entre la première et la seconde position (P1 et P2 respectivement), la position neutre (N2) étant déterminée par un équilibre statique entre les forces de rappel jouant sur la plaque (9). Cette plaque (9) est commandée de façon que sa partie plane soit disposée perpendiculairement à la direction du mouvement du navire (1), et que la plaque offre à l'eau une plus grande résistance lorsqu'on la positionne à l'opposé de la direction du mouvement souhaité du navire que lorsqu'on la positionne dans ladite direction. L'invention concerne aussi un dispositif permettant de mettre en oeuvre ce procédé.
