ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Gas generator for an airbag, in particular in a motor vehicle, consisting of a pressure container (1) for receiving a high pressure, highly compressed gas, with at least one opening (3) in the pressure container (1) closed by a seal (2), and with a release mechanism, characterised in that the seal (2) is constructed to be so weak that it cannot, by itself, withstand the nominal pressure of the gas filling in the pressure container (1) and that an additional supporting element (4) which is displaceable by means of the release mechanism is provided, which supports the side of the seal (2) opposite the opening (3).
