A boat lift has a base for supporting the lift, two lift frames pivotally mounted on the base and a pair of rails mounted on the lift frames in the manner of a four-bar linkage. The linkage is operated using two hydraulic cylinders extending diagonally across the linkage, immediately below the rails. The positioning of the cylinders leaves open the docking bay between the rails so the lift can be used in shallower water than where the cylinders are positioned between the rails.
