A payment authentication service authenticates the identity of a payer during online transactions. The authentication service of the present invention allows a card issuer to verify a cardholder's identity using a variety of authentication methods, such as the use of passwords. Also, the only system participant requiring a certificate is the issuing financial institution. One embodiment of the invention for authenticating the identity of a cardholder during an online transaction involves querying an access control server to determine if a cardholder is enrolled in the payment authentication service, requests a password from the cardholder, verifies the password, and notifies a merchant whether the cardholder's authenticity has been verified. In another aspect of the invention, a chip card and the authentication service independently generate cryptograms that must match in order for the service to verify that the correct chip card is being used by the cardholder.
Un service d'authentification de paiement assure l'authentification de l'identité d'un payeur lors de transactions en ligne. Le service d'authentification selon la présente invention permet à l'émetteur de carte de vérifier l'identité d'un titulaire de carte via divers procédés d'authentification, notamment via l'utilisation de mots de passe. D'ailleurs, le seul participant du système qui nécessite un certificat est l'institution financière émettrice. L'un des modes de réalisation de l'invention, destiné à authentifier l'identité d'un titulaire de carte lors d'une transaction en ligne, consiste à consulter un serveur de commande d'accès de manière à déterminer si le titulaire de la carte est connu du service d'authentification de paiement, à demander un mot de passe au titulaire de la carte, à vérifier ledit mot de passe et à notifier le commerçant de la vérification de l'authenticité du titulaire de carte. Selon un autre aspect de l'invention, une carte à puce et le service d'authentification génèrent indépendamment des cryptogrammes, lesquels doivent correspondre pour que le service puisse vérifier que le titulaire de la carte utilise la bonne carte à puce.
