A method wherein a sour natural gas stream can be treated to produce formaldehyde from methane and methyl mercaptans, (primarily methanethiol (CH3SH) and a small amount of dimethyl sulfide (CH3SCH3)) from hydrogen sulfide, and the methyl mercaptans preferably are passed in contact with a catalyst comprising a supported metal oxide or a bulk metal oxide in the presence of an oxidizing agent and for a time sufficient to convert at least a portion of the methyl mercaptan to formaldehyde (CH2O), and sulfur dioxide (SO2).

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de traiter un flux de gaz naturel corrosif pour produire du formaldéhyde à partir de méthane ou de méthylmercaptans, (principalement du méthanethiol (CH¿3?SH) et une petite dose de diméthylsulfure (CH¿3?SCH¿3?)) à partir de sulfure d'hydrogène, les méthylmercaptans étant, de préférence, mis en contact avec un catalyseur comprenant un oxyde métallique sur support ou un oxyde métallique en vrac, en présence d'un agent oxydant, pour une durée suffisant à convertir au moins une partie du méthylmercaptan en formaldéhyde (CH¿2?O) et en dioxyde de soufre (SO¿2?).
