Methods and systems for making an edible substrate (10) may include depositing an edible material (18) onto a backing material (15) from a slot-coat applicator (40), a spray applicator (90) or a combination of thereof, to form a substantially planar image-bearing edible substrate suitable for adherence to an edible material. An image may be printed on the edible substrate using one or more printing techniques, including screen printing, offset printing, thermal transfer, ink jet printing, lithographic blanket transfer printing, flexographic printing, letter press rotary relief plate printing, web printing, reel to reel printing and gravure printing.
